The new type of phone booth–phoneless
I recently came across a photo on Reddit of a phone booth/box installed in an office, but it was a phone booth/box to use a mobile phone in, the booth/box itself didn’t have a phone. The photo was uploaded ten days ago and has received over 1000 comments. The comments were along the lines of how the mobile phone phone booth/box is a good idea, as you don’t have to worry about people overhearing your conversations and, in turn you don’t have to worry about disturbing anyone with your chatting. The photo also lead to discussions about having to share an office or cubicle with people and having to overhear their conversations and worrying about people listening to their own.
I found this photo amazing, the mobile phone phone booth/box is a good and obvious idea and this particular one that I came across, obviously wouldn’t be the very first one. However what amazed me is the fact that this is a seemingly new idea, despite the fact that mobile phones have become more common over the last ten years and we are now using them for multiple purposes, other than phone calls. I am yet to see an example of this new kind of phone booth/box in Australia, but I’m sure it won’t be too long before I’m seeing them in the street, like I use to see “regular” phone booths/boxes. Even though I use my mobile phone and haven’t used a pay phone in months, I do find it sad that the phone booth/box seems to be dying out.
I am yet to travel overseas, but I wonder if in the not-so-distant future if there will be K6 telephone-less boxes in London for locals and tourists to use? Only time will tell.
